Influencer Marketing & AI Search: How Creators Get Your Brand Into ChatGPT, Gemini & Co. (2026)

David WinkerInfluencer marketing & AI search: creators get your brand into ChatGPT, Gemini & co.

Short answer: Influencers get your brand into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews because these AI systems build their answers from sources where real people talk about products – above all YouTube and Reddit. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, no factor correlated as strongly with visibility in AI answers as YouTube mentions – stronger than backlinks. What matters is not a creator’s reach but citable content: in-depth tests, comparisons and demos in which your brand is clearly named in the text.

Key takeaways

  • AI chatbots recommend products based on what others say about them online – not just on your website.
  • Reddit and YouTube are among the most-cited sources in AI search, but every AI weighs its sources differently.
  • According to Ahrefs, YouTube mentions correlate most strongly with AI visibility (correlation of about 0.74).
  • 40.8% of YouTube videos cited by AI have fewer than 1,000 views – small creators count.
  • Long-form beats Shorts: 94% of YouTube citations go to longer videos.
  • Sources change fast. Spread across several channels and measure monthly.

What does AI search mean for brands and influencer marketing?

AI search refers to answers that chatbots and search engines generate directly with generative AI – ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, or Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. Instead of ten blue links, users get a ready-made recommendation. Optimizing for this is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO).

For brands, the question changes. Ranking on page one of Google is no longer enough. What matters is whether the AI names your brand when someone asks, “What’s the best product for …?” And the AI builds that answer largely from what third parties write and show about products – in forums, videos and reviews. That’s exactly where creators are active.

This is already happening in practice: in a survey by ECC Club Köln, just under a third of respondents (31%) said they use AI chatbots for product information and research (HORIZONT, October 2025). In the US, Digiday reported in August 2026 that brands and agencies are already briefing creators so their content gets cited by AI models (summary via El Ecosistema Startup).

Where do ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity get their answers?

AI chatbots with web search look up the web when answering a question and cite the pages their answer relies on. In ChatGPT you can see these sources by tapping “Sources” below an answer. Analyze millions of these citations and a clear pattern emerges.

Peec AI analyzed 30 million sources across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. The three most-cited domains overall: Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn – exactly the platforms where people and creators post (Peec AI, March 2026). In Gemini, Reddit ranks first with 28.5% of citations among the top 50 sources and YouTube second with 14.6%, according to Ahrefs (Ahrefs Brand Radar, September 2026).

Most-cited sources in Gemini 2026: Reddit 28.5%, YouTube 14.6%, Wikipedia 8.8% – Ahrefs Brand Radar
Reddit and YouTube dominate Gemini’s sources (Ahrefs, US data, September 2026).

So what creators say about your products can land directly in chatbot answers. What that means for your influencer strategy depends heavily on which AI your audience uses.

Which sources do ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude use?

Every AI has its own favorite sources. A strategy that works for Gemini won’t automatically work the same way for ChatGPT or Claude.

  • ChatGPT: Top sources are Wikipedia, Reddit and Forbes; LinkedIn is in the top 5 (Peec AI). YouTube is rarely linked directly – according to Scrunch in only about 0.3% of answers. Even so, YouTube mentions correlate most strongly with visibility in ChatGPT (more below).
  • Gemini: Reddit ahead of YouTube and Wikipedia – community and video are the main influencer levers here.
  • Perplexity: Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn make up the top 3 (Peec AI). According to Scrunch, however, Perplexity nearly stopped citing YouTube around August 12, 2026.
  • Claude: Almost two thirds of citations (64%) go to brand and product websites; social media accounts for just 0.9%, and Reddit wasn’t cited at all. Among the few social citations, LinkedIn leads with 43% (OtterlyAI, June 2026).
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: YouTube and Reddit rank first and second (Peec AI). Instagram is cited mainly via Reels – 89% of Instagram citations in AI Overviews (BrightEdge, August 2026).

Each AI cites different sources – which defines the right influencer lever.

Keep in mind: this data comes mostly from the US and from different studies with their own methodologies. It shows tendencies, not fixed rankings.

Why is YouTube the strongest influencer lever for AI search?

YouTube is the most important influencer channel for AI visibility because brand mentions in videos correlate more strongly with AI recommendations than any other factor studied. Ahrefs matched 75,000 brands against millions of AI answers in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews.

  • YouTube mentions: correlation of about 0.74 – the highest value in the study.
  • Mentions on other websites: 0.66 (ChatGPT).
  • Link text containing the brand name: 0.51 (ChatGPT).
  • Domain Rating, i.e. backlink strength: only 0.27 (ChatGPT).

Source: Ahrefs, December 2025. Correlation isn’t proof of cause and effect – strong brands also get mentioned in videos more often. Still, the direction is clear: it’s not the link that counts, it’s that your brand gets named. That holds even for ChatGPT, although ChatGPT rarely links to YouTube directly.

Sponsorships also show a direct effect: Scrunch analyzed thousands of sponsored YouTube videos. When a sponsored video was cited, the AI named the sponsor in about 40% of answers versus 32.3% otherwise – a 24% lift. For prompts that didn’t mention the brand, the effect rose to 1.35× (Scrunch, October 2026).

Which creator videos does AI cite?

AI mainly cites in-depth videos with concrete value – not the ones with the most views. Three studies paint a consistent picture:

  • Reach barely matters: 40.8% of YouTube videos cited by AI had fewer than 1,000 views; views, likes and subscribers showed practically no correlation with citation frequency (OtterlyAI, 2026).
  • Long-form over Shorts: 94% of YouTube citations went to long-form videos, Shorts got 5.7% (OtterlyAI).
  • Creators over brands: In consumer goods and automotive, about 60% of cited videos came from creators, 30% from editorial outlets and only 10% from brands themselves (Sundogs study via Net Influencer, 2026).
  • Tests and comparisons: 77% of cited videos included product tests or demonstrations, 71% brand comparisons, 90% clear product benefits (Sundogs).
  • Text matters: Longer, useful video descriptions correlated moderately with more citations (OtterlyAI). AI reads the title, description and transcript – not the image.
Stats: 40.8% of YouTube videos cited by AI have under 1,000 views, 94% are long-form, sponsors are named 1.24x more often
For AI citations, format and substance matter – not channel size.

For your influencer marketing, this means a micro-creator with honest 12-minute tests can be more valuable for AI search than a channel with hundreds of thousands of followers and 30-second clips. Our guide on finding micro-influencers shows how to find them.

Fictional YouTube creator profiles: tech reviewer and skincare creator with long-form videos suit AI visibility better than Shorts channels
Fictional examples: small channels with tests and facts are often more valuable to AI than big Shorts channels.

What role do Reddit, LinkedIn, Instagram and TikTok play?

Besides YouTube, other platforms also contribute to AI visibility – to different degrees and less reliably.

  • Reddit: The No. 1 source for Gemini and Perplexity. In ChatGPT, Reddit’s share fell in mid-August 2026 from an average of 3.83% to 0.52% of citations, according to Promptwatch (TechRepublic). Genuine experience reports from users and creators in relevant subreddits remain valuable – paid posts are risky and often break community rules.
  • LinkedIn: The key channel for B2B. According to Goodie, LinkedIn’s share of social citations grew from about 8% to roughly a fifth within three months; most cited posts come from individual employees (Goodie, 2026). ChatGPT, by contrast, draws about 80% of its LinkedIn citations from company and job pages, according to BrightEdge.
  • Instagram: Works mainly through Google: 89% of Instagram citations in AI Overviews are Reels (BrightEdge). The caption is the search text.
  • TikTok: Growing as a source, but from a small base. According to Goodie, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook citations come mostly from Google’s AI surfaces.

Overall, social media’s share of AI citations rose from 4.9% to 7.2% between January and August 2026. At the same time, AI models noticeably changed their sources 16 times in seven months – unannounced (Goodie). One channel isn’t enough.

How does a creator video end up in an AI answer?

The path into an AI answer runs through text. AI doesn’t “watch” a video like a person; it processes the title, description, chapters and transcript.

  1. Creator tests: An in-depth test, comparison or demo of your product is created.
  2. Text gets read: Title, description and transcript include your brand name and concrete facts.
  3. AI finds the source: For a matching prompt (“What’s the best … for …?”), the video is used as a relevant source.
  4. Brand gets named: The AI summarizes what the source says – and names your brand.
4-step process: creator tests product, AI reads title, description and transcript, finds the source and names the brand in its answer
From creator video to AI answer: the text around the video is what counts.

How do you brief influencers for AI visibility?

A brief for AI visibility focuses on substance rather than staging. Add these points to your usual requirements:

  • Format: long-form over Shorts. According to Sundogs, cited videos often run eight minutes or longer.
  • Content: a real test, demo or comparison – including the problem your product solves and concrete facts such as ingredients, specs or price.
  • Brand name in the text: in the title, video description and caption, not just spoken. Scrunch explicitly recommends specifying in the brief how the brand should appear in the description.
  • Chapters: timestamps in the description make sections easier for AI systems to find (OtterlyAI).
  • Honesty: allow comparisons with alternatives. According to Sundogs, brands that try to control every statement contribute little to AI citations.
  • Disclosure: sponsored videos must be recognizable as ads. See our article on ad disclosure in influencer marketing.
  • Breadth: several small creators with expertise rather than one big channel.

How do you measure whether creator content appears in AI answers?

You measure AI visibility by regularly asking the same questions in the main chatbots and checking whether your brand is named and which sources are cited.

  1. Define prompts: 10 to 30 typical buying questions from your audience, e.g. “Which skincare helps with dry skin?” – especially ones without your brand name.
  2. Pick chatbots: at least ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews; add Perplexity or Claude depending on your audience.
  3. Check sources: Which videos, threads and articles get cited? Is your creators’ content among them?
  4. Repeat monthly: Sources change quickly; Scrunch observed YouTube citations dropping by about 43% within a month.
  5. Use tools: For larger prompt sets, specialized GEO tools such as Ahrefs Brand Radar, OtterlyAI or Peec AI help.

Combine these with your campaign’s classic metrics – reach, clicks and cost per result. Our KPI glossary shows which metrics matter when choosing creators.

What are the limits of the current data?

Studies on AI search are young, use different methods and partly contradict each other. Keep these limitations in mind:

  • US focus: Almost all data comes from the US. Comparable studies for European markets are still rare.
  • Correlation, not causation: The Ahrefs and Scrunch results show relationships, not proof.
  • High volatility: Reddit in ChatGPT and YouTube in Perplexity both collapsed within days in August 2026.
  • Industry differences: The Claude data is based on SaaS and tech prompts, the Sundogs data on consumer goods and automotive.

The direction is clear nonetheless: brands that creators discuss in depth, honestly and with the brand name in the text have a better chance of being named in AI answers.

FAQ: influencer marketing and AI search

Can influencers get my brand into ChatGPT?

They can significantly improve your chances. ChatGPT and other AI systems base their recommendations on sources such as YouTube, Reddit and expert articles. According to Ahrefs, YouTube mentions correlate most strongly with AI visibility. There’s no guarantee of being named, though.

Which platform matters most for AI search?

For influencer marketing, YouTube is currently the strongest lever. Reddit is very important for Gemini and Perplexity, LinkedIn for B2B topics. Instagram and TikTok work mainly through Google’s AI features.

Do I need big influencers for AI visibility?

No. According to OtterlyAI, 40.8% of YouTube videos cited by AI had fewer than 1,000 views. What matters is in-depth, fact-rich content such as tests and comparisons – not follower count.

Does AI cite YouTube Shorts?

Much less often. According to OtterlyAI, 94% of YouTube citations went to long-form videos and only 5.7% to Shorts, mostly in Google’s AI surfaces.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: everything a brand does to be named in answers from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews – owned content, press coverage, community mentions and creator content.

How quickly does influencer marketing work in AI search?

There’s no general answer. AI sources change often, and citations can disappear within weeks. Plan continuously with several creators and measure results monthly.
